Treatment and pathogenesis of acute hyperkalemia

This article focuses on the pathogenesis, clinical manifestations, and various treatment modalities for acute hyperkalemia and presents a systematic approach to selecting a treatment strategy. Hyperkalemia, a life-threatening condition caused by extracellular potassium shift or decreased renal potassium excretion, usually presents with non-specific symptoms. Early recognition of moderate to sev...

Hyperkalemia: a Potentially Lethal Clinical Condition

∑ Hyperkalemia develops when the regulation between potassium intake and potassium excretion, or the distribution between intraand extracellular potassium is disturbed. It is a common, silent, and potentially lethal clinical condition, which seldom occurs in patients with normal renal function. Clinically, the most important effect of hyperkalemia is that which the condition has on the myocardi...

Management of severe hyperkalemia.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Hyperkalemia is one of the few potentially lethal electrolyte disturbances. Prompt recognition and expeditious treatment of severe hyperkalemia are expected to save lives. This review is intended to provide intensivists and other interested clinicians with an understanding of the pathophysiology that underlies hyperkalemia, and a rational approach to its management. ...

Antihypertensive Medications and the Prevalence of Hyperkalemia in a Large Health System.

Little is known about the frequency and patterns of hyperkalemia in clinical settings. We evaluated the association between baseline antihypertensive medications that may affect potassium levels (angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors, angiotensin receptor blockers, β-blockers, loop/thiazide diuretics, and potassium-sparing diuretics) and hyperkalemia, defined by potassium >5 mEq/L and >5.5 m...

Severe Acute Hyperkalemia during Pre-Anhepatic Stage in Cadaveric Orthotopic Liver Transplantation

A serious hazard to patients during orthotopic liver transplantation is hyperkalemia. Although the most frequent and hazardous hyperkalemia occurs immediately after reperfusion of the newly transplanted liver, morbid hyperkalemia could happen in the other phases during orthotopic liver transplantation. However, pre-anhepatic hyperkalemia during orthotopic liver transplantation is rare. This rep...
